Kingsport, Tenn. (February 28, 2009) — Arts4Kids Club will host jewelry artist Glenna Fleiner for an up-cycling workshop on March 28 in room 303 of the Kingsport Renaissance Center. Participants will need to pre-register for the session of their choice, either 1-2:30pm or 3-4:30pm, to ensure their preferred time. To pre-register call the Arts Council at (423) 392-8420. Arts4Kids Outreach will be at the Riverview Boys and Girls Club on Friday March 6th and at the Lee Family Center on Friday March 13th.
Ms. Fleiner was first exposed to studio jewelry while earning a BA in Art Education from Radford College. She has been refining her work, with its richly etched and milled surfaces, for over 40 years. Ms. Fleiner considers her self a life long learner and continues to pursue educational opportunities to expand her already vast talents.
This month’s workshop, up-cycling, will transform disposable materials that would have otherwise ended up in the trash into Green Robot Badges. Participants will combine common materials (paper, foil, cardboard, straws, aluminum can tab tops, bottle caps, hardware, found objects, etc.,) with easy construction methods and very simple tools. After pin backs have been attached, students will have a three-dimensional "wearable sculpture" and they will have the satisfaction of reusing something potentially wasteful in a new and exciting way.
Arts4Kids Club is an introductory arts program for children ages 6-12 presented by the Arts Council of Greater Kingsport. Arts4Kids Club registration is $20 for the school-year program, or $5/individual workshop. The program is designed to expose children to a wide variety of arts and encourage their life-long pursuit of creative endeavors. For more information or to join, visit the Arts4Kids section of our website at www.kingsportARTS.org. The Arts4Kids program is funded under agreement with the State of Tennessee, the Tennessee Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as, the Kingsport Community Foundation (a fund of the East Tennessee Foundation), Eastman Chemical Co., the City of Kingsport’s Cultural Arts Division, and other local sponsors.
